Bio
Susi Gelb (b. 1985, lives and works between Munich and Berlin) is a visual artist based in Berlin, Germany. In the studio, she‛ s something of an alchemist – testing materials, processes, new technologies, interactions. Outside she is highly aware of the context. This is how a sculpture may glow in the dark, with its embedded phosphorescence. And this is also how a palm tree grows impossibly in the middle of Odeonsplatz in Munich. Susi Gelb draws inspiration from natural entities and phenomena as well as science and technology. Some of her sculptures seem to be living materials which change their properties on their own accord. Her video installations modify the perception of space, physics, time.
Susi Gelb has graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. She was an artist in residence at w-o-l- k-e, Brussels, Malimage Monitor Center, Sri Lanka and Fogo Island, Newfoundland. Recent exhibitions include no such things grow here, a major public art project in the city center of Munich (2017), 49° at Long Studio, Fogo Island (2019) and mythe en place at Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2018). In 2015 Susi Gelb has founded the nomadic artist-run space easy!upstream in Munich and curated several exhibitions.
